comments="I returned a letter before reading letters from the rest that responded to your page on Jane Fonda. I am now 49 years of age and a retired Colonel. I was in college during the 60's and fought in the Vietnam War, Panama, and Desert Storm. The war that will forever stay with me is the Vietnam War....declared or not...still a war.The war, itself, was not fought for the right reasons. I can see that now and say that with certainty. But that does not ever FORGIVE the fact that Ms. Fonda did what she did. The impact, the hurt, and the speech casued more deaths. I was there and saw the impact...the hatred. We fight and die for a reason. We follow orders of the superiors appointed over us. We went when called. We did not go to Canada..we did not desert. We could not get jobs upon returning and had to take off uniforms to keep from being beaten by the peace-niks. We were supposed to be ashamed of fighting in a country so far away.
As soldiers, we follow orders and fight whom we are told to fight. We have feelings and morals but a much deeper sense of responsibility...especially when commanding men's lives in battle. Jane Fonda was wrong. Terribly wrong and cannot be forgiven. We are supposed to heal the wounds of war but one cannot heal the wounds of traitor. The war is over and I can look and talk to a Vietnamese...both North and South. I will never talk, buy a product, or walk one step out of my way to even see "Hanoi Jane". I commanded brave men in battle....they deserve the recognition and the forgiveness of having to kill or be killed. Jane Fonda deserves nothing. Not even sympathy.
