      I don't know where you got the idea that I am an apologist for gang violence or gangmembers. I am nothing of the sort, as you probably would have discovered if you had taken the time to more fully explore my webpages. However, I do not think it is ever too late to see the error of your ways and repent. Some of the most profoundly impressive persons I have ever met were reformed gangmembers who found religion in prison.
      What is the difference between a thug with a gun on the city streets and a soldier with a gun acting like a thug? The soldier acting under color of authority is more reprehensible; you were not a member of the "biggest gang on earth" in the military but a soldier following orders. How strange to read your unpleasant email right after receiving another that I found so inspiring from a soldier serving in Bosnia-Hercegovina.
      Your email is a powerful argument for military police. Recently a retired naval officer was telling me about the low quality of some of the people he dealt with in the military. Badly educated and mean-spirited, he commented on how, "There but for the grace of God..." they might themselves have been convict "lifers" if things had gone a little differently in their lives. Your email reminds me of his comments. Take the gun out of the hands of a cop or soldier who is a thug at heart, and he is still a thug (just without a badge or army backing him up). The world is "indifferent" to the "true intentions" of that arch-villain Adolf Hitler? What can we learn today that cannot already be understood in Hilter's book "Mein Kampf?" It is painfully simple in reading that book: Hitler describes what he wishes to do and why, and then he proceeded to attempt to do it. Hitler's criminal genius, like that of Macbeth, provoked a justifiable response from outside countries which ended in the destruction of the Third Reich in massive bloody warfare - Berlin, and much of Germany, being reduced to ashes and rubble by the time it was over.

You remark that it is "sad" we fail to appreciate the "positive" and "even neutral" legacy of Hitler, implying that Hitler has been demonized unfairly by the West who have written history according to the point of view of the victors. Do we do ourselves an injustice by failing to appreciate Hitler's good traits? I challenge you to list five positive accomplishments Hitler and his regime left to mankind. I think it more worrisome that future generations will forget exactly how depraved a leader was Hitler, how profoundly barbaric was the Third Reich, how riddled with the virulent cancer of fanaticism was Germany at the time. I worry more that the obfuscating passage of time will lead us to forget how abasing were the crimes of Nazism to the edifice of Western civilization, how millions of persons in thousands of locations suffered so thoroughly because of them. Alduous Huxley was correct when he claimed, "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history."

It is true, as you say, that 99% of the Western population today sees Hitler as "despicable." God help us if that should ever change substantially in the future, as that might very well presage the return of such steely dictators seeking to forge messianic destinies in blood and iron through revolution and war! Unlike most Nazis who e-mail me, you sound half-way intelligent. I would, then, expect better from you. Sad.

I care nothing about a man's religion or his "heritage"; show me the content of his character, color of his soul, and the message it brings to the world. A "heritage," as you put it, is by itself nothing: it is a beginning, an opportunity to do something with your future; a person either does or does not bring honor to their past through their actions and beliefs today.

What exactly is it about the accident of my birth in terms of religion, ethnicity, or nationality that I should "honor"? Are there not scoundrels as well as saints of all creeds and colors? Should I not, regardless of the source, reject the scoundrel and embrace the saint? A "freeman"? Replace the "free" with "looney" and you will find yourself closer to the truth. Maybe the isolation out there in Kamiah is such that you begin to hear voices in the hills... If so, I recommend getting out more and trying to gain a reality check back in the larger world beyond Idaho. If you declare war on a federal United States government while you can still speak your mind freely, politic openly for representatives, and seek legal redress against purported governmental wrongs, then may God help you because almost nobody else in America will!

Listen to me in this: During the struggles against the ineffectual Articles of Confederation and then polemical Constitutional Convention of the late 1780s, many were the skeptics who doubted whether a country could be successfully ruled by democracy. Chaos, instability, ignorance, civil war -- all this would be the result of naively attempting self-governance and foolishly forgoing the strong paternal hand of a King. I see in your absurd admonition that we "rise up and declare ourselves a free people" living proof that there is something to this claim. Edmund Burke was correct when he claimed that authority will be tyrannous from policy, when a people are rebellious by nature; and you bandy about the words "freedom" and "God" a bit too liberally and hastily for my taste. If you want to swear unswerving allegiance to your God, join a seminary; but as a citizen of this country, you obey the law. If you think the law mistaken, go to jail to make your point. But if you raise a gun against the law, may it fall on you like a hammer!

Until you can offer me a better argument that the massive bloodshed in overthrowing the U.S. government and its democratically elected representatives would bring about more good than evil -- more ultimate happiness and prosperity than vast suffering and death with little or nothing gained -- I will think your call to arms nothing but folly and utter nonsense. Such militiaman thinking makes me wonder what in the world is going on in places like Idaho.
